Woodworking

Unique, High Quality, Hand made spoons crafted out of local hardwoods and sanded to perfection.

About Coweeta Heritage Woodenware:

Our spoons are made from the finest Appalachian hardwoods such as Beech, Ash, Cherry, Black Birch, Walnut and others. Most of the wood is harvested from our property when we have to clear for other projects. Instead of becoming firewood, we turn the wood into a unique heirloom utensil that you can pass on to your children or grandchildren.

Making a Quality Wooden-ware Piece:

Starting with a sound piece of wood, free of knots, we prepare blocks of wood to cut the spoon blanks out of. Care is taken to make sure the grain runs true with the handle of the spoon which makes it much stronger. The spoon blanks are cut out with a band saw and rough shaped with a carbide grinder.

Final shaping and sanding can only be done by hand to give each utensil its unique handcrafted quality. No machine can duplicate this process.

Sanding:

Nothing is spared to make your spoon as smooth as possible and to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. We start with 80 grit sand paper and go through a series of 7 grits to #400.

Between each sanding the piece is wetted and allowed to dry. This raises the grain so that the next sanding produces a smoother surface. This process ensures that your wooden-ware spoon will stay smooth through endless washings and use.

Finishing:

We treat our spoons with a natural finish that we make from bees wax and walnut oil. You can renew the finish with oil from your kitchen (olive, walnut or other). Mineral oil can also be used. We don’t recommend, however, that you wash your spoon in a dishwasher! You can wash it off in soapy water and allow to dry.
